Before Martin Luther King Jr., before President Obama, and before Halle Berry went off like some crazy madwoman at the Academy Awards just a few years ago, there was this terrific lady, who won an Oscar herself, and most deservedly so. I just love this woman's speech. It's very sincere and moving:

Before Martin Luther King Jr., before President Obama, and before Halle Berry went off like some crazy madwoman at the Academy Awards just a few years ago, there was this terrific lady, who won an Oscar herself, and most deservedly so. I just love this woman's speech. It's very sincere and moving:

Her acceptance speech made me cry! She is amazing, I did not think the movie was as good as the book, but she was so good as Mammy, and I agree an amazing person :)
I totally agree. Her speech and her performance were top notch.
I got teary-eyed listening to her speech. It was very heartfelt and humble - so sweet.
I loved her in the movie. I was a little girl when it came to the theaters, and my parents took my brother and I to the local drive-in to see it for the first time. We were in our pajamas because we usually fell asleep half way through the second movie - but I stayed awake through the whole thing. I was completely captivated. It was my first exposure to the civil war, and I was fascinated by it from then on.

Oh man! That is so true. I saw Hattie McDaniel's grave the other day, she is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Santa Monica Boulevard. "Cause, it aint fittin, it just aint fittin!" Love that saying.
Legend has it that her speech was closely scripted by the powers that be at MGM. Her emotion and sincerity, however, seem to be true and her own
She was great. I have always loved this speech.
She was a beacon of light for a lot of actresses and actors!
The NAACP got on her about the roles she took. Hattie's response:
"I'd rather play a maid and make $700 a week than be one for $7."
