LA SEMANA DE OBAMA.

So back in 2000 I believe, I started going to the pretty cool local gay bar in town which was called APACHE back then and thus began my karaoke career. Every Sunday, a small but loyal group would meet up there and we'd have a blast belting out all kinds of tunes, acting silly, and generally having a good time. I actually met lots of cool people there; some I still see from time to time or keep in touch with online. Then around 2004 I think, Apache was bought up by new owners and closed for remodeling for about 3 months. The new refurbished place FUEL was nice and all, but did not have karaoke for quite some time and it took a while to build up its own crowd. Karaoke was re-introduced and a new era of fun was born. Sadly, this is the last week FUEL will be open, as it has been sold to new owners, who will most likely turn it into a straight/hetero bar now. This really sucks. I'm quite bummed about it. Going to FUEL about twice a week was very therapeutic, and frankly I don't even drink, but it was soooo much fun to get up and sing and unwind from work! And like I said earlier, I've met some really cool people that I would never see otherwise! It's as if CHEERS is finally closing. And to add insult to injury, we've lost another gay bar here in the Valley to the overwhelming hetero majority. They claim they're gonna find another place sometime soon for a new gay bar/club hangout, but I highly doubt it. We'll see...

I'm still in disbelief and relieved that George W. Bush is out of office! WHEW! What a weird surreal screwed up last eight years; it's as if we were under a dark cloud of super conservative overspending warmongering assholes in charge! And how embarrassing that George W. was booed and hated as much as he was till the bitter end. This president got shoes throw at him not long ago for crying out loud! Hated by the world, and his own people, can he sleep at night knowing how despised he was? I don't hate the man, but I certainly do feel his advisers (i.e. Cheney, Rumsfeld) ruined his image/standing and used him as a true moronic puppet for their horrible selfish interests. I almost feel sorry for the retard, to leave with such public disrespect. I did not vote for our current president, but I wish him well nonetheless and pray/hope he will do something good out of all this calamity he has inherited. At least this one has a nice command of the English language right? LOL! And in her new role as Secretary of State is that phony but highly effective competent bitch BILLARY! Congrats to her!

Do you love Pedro Almodóvar movies the way I do? My good friend/co-worker loved ¡Átame! (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down!) which was made almost 20 years ago; I lent it to him last night to watch and he thought it was twistedly funny. A young and handsome Antonio Banderas
in his prime, in what is to me one of the most inane sex-filled enormously entertaining movies out of Spain I have ever seen:

Come up to Bakersfield...You can come hang out at our only gay bar. If you don't mind the crappy rap music and gangsta thug lesbians having a tuna bash you should have a blast....actually the only reason it stays open is the str8 owners make money off the poor gays here because there's nowhere else to go unless we drive to LA or Fresno.

Now that was some clip. I love watching foreign films (good ones) and I found that clip hilarious. Sexually charged to say the least.

Want to know a funny thing about me? I've only been to three gay bars in my life. I totally don't enjoy myself at a gay bar. It's the oddest thing. Now, I'm not saying that there's anything bad regarding gay bars, I just could never enjoy myself. I guess it's bars in general. I enjoyed New York's clubs instead.

Webster Hall, The Limelight, The Tunnel...

Love your writing style WAT. Always did.

That's exactly how I feel about Micky's in WEHO and before any haters start ragging on Micky's, let me just say at least the pretension didn't slap you in the face as you walked in the door like it does in other (the Abbey) WEHO gay bars. Anyway, I know you're not a fan of WEHO but the Mother Load is really lots of fun, alas they don't have karaoke but they do have cute men.

I do so love Almodovar and love his more recent work with Penelope Cruz. No one does such an incredible job of creating truly loveable, albeit wacky characters.

I'm actually impressed by Obama so far. The man knows how to work the political systems!

Oh that is sad. That was the one and only bar I was ever banned from for fighting. Go figure. Fist fight on the dance floor. I liked that place ...when I was allowed to go.

That's one of my favorite Almodovar movies too. And I think Antonio's career went downhill once he came to Hollywood. Oh, and when he met Melanie Griffith

I'm late on this one cuz I was out of town from Friday morning till about 1:30am this morning with no computer access...and as you know, I was not present the last two nights Fuel was open. I am sad, but it hasn't hit me yet because I had been sick and not able to go out, then I went out of town...in the midst of all that Mario calls to tell me the news. So I am wondering when it'll come crashing down on me that one of the most significant chapters of my life in L.A. has closed (no pun intended). On one hand, I don't need to drink and smoke two or three nights a week. On the other...it was indeed my Cheers and I can't imagine finding another place that would feel that comfortable to me. CERTAINLY no straight bar ever will.

Don't you dare be a stranger, Juaquin!!! I'll effin' cut you.

My friend Mark LOVES Pedro Almodovar movies and owns them all. I am making my way through them with him and they are fantastic. I really dig the chick with the Van Gogh features. But nothing tops Antonio.
