O.k. so my trial is over. An unfortunate drunk man fell to his death trying to get off an MTA bus hitting the back of his head on the concrete below. The plaintiff felt the driver and the MTA were responsible, thus was seeking monetary compensation.
This case had frivolous lawsuit written all over it, and some of my fellow jurors felt that way from beginning to end, but as I heard the human story behind it, and the loss of this human being, I felt very sympathetic and emotional about the whole situation. I was disgusted at the imcompetent plaintiff lawyer whom at times did have some bright moments where he shone through, totally turned on by one of the expert witnesses (a handsome older man who caught my attention BIG TIME!), and really disappointed and disheartened by the racism and prejudice of some of the jurors in their decision only because the man killed and his girlfriend were illegal Mexican immigrants.
In the end, the unanimous vote was to not blame the driver nor the MTA for this terrible accident, it just happened to be an unfortunate mistake the drunken man made in his alcoholic state as he misstepped off the bus. The evidence proved it so. I came out of there a sad man, not wanting to be as judgmental (as some of my other fellow disgusting jurors were) about the fact he was drunk and that it "WAS HIS FAULT" that he died.
We all make mistakes. And sometimes, we pay for them dearly. Personal responsibility is a very important forgotten concept nowadays. For the most part, we are who we've chosen to be.
Till judgment day...adieu.
