THE ROCK ALBUM OF THE DECADE.

----------------
There are rock and roll music albums that define a decade:

1960s- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles

1970s- Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd

1980s-The Joshua Tree by U2

1990s- Nevermind by Nirvana

What would be the one rock album that could define this opening decade of the 2000s?

Well, in this writer's humble opinion, I can think of no other worthy candidate than Green Day's 2004 masterpiece, American Idiot.

Almost two years since its release, this record already has legendary status written all over it. Critics and fans loved the album and embraced it immediately for its very introspective lyrics and beautiful rock harmonies and melodies. The attempt by Green Day to make this a concept album complete with long rock opera-like suites, a political message during this post 9/11 dreary Bush administration, and songs blending into each other worked miraculously to create a true work of art. Mindblowingly reflective and gorgeous to listen to, this CD was a hit in every sense of the word: it won numerous awards, and sold some five million copies in the U.S.

The band never sounded better, more mature, or more confident. And it really took everyone by surprise, considering Green Day was pretty much forgotten as the little punk band that made it big back in the 90s, but was not a big force to be reckoned with anymore. In many ways, this album was a huge comeback. HUGE. I used to love the lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong back in the 90s when he was simply adorable. His new mascara-ridden weird hair look though, completely turned me off! But, he sure as hell made one incredible album.

We're a mere four years till 2010, and barring any other monumental rock record coming out between now and then, the award for best album of the decade goes to American Idiot
. The hopes, dreams, disappointments, and overall mood of our current decade are captured no better than this.

Bravo!

"Don't wan't to be an American Idiot! One nation controlled by the media! Information age of hysteria! It's calling out to idiot America!" --Green Day.

I also agree. It's a fantastic album and after numerous plays, it's still great. It's also one of those albums that everyone I knows has.

You know...all very good points. I'm not a huge fan of Green Day, but i do have that album and it is very good. I love yo choices for all the other albums..all some of my favorites! (although i think abbey road is better than sgt. pepper (although i understand the cultural relevance of SP being on that list)). All the albums you mentioned I still listen to on a regular basis. Great post my friend! Here's to music!
