COME COME, NUCLEAR WAR!

Yes, there's something utterly fascinating about nuclear weapons, wouldn't you agree?

I mean, it's pretty horrific to know that one such bomb unleashed on a major population center today would be beyond devastating, but still man! STILL! To think that humanity was able to harness the power of the basic atom and turn it into history's greatest nightmare: nuclear weapons! HOW GENIUS! HOW BEAUTIFUL! HOW RIDICULOUSLY DESTRUCTIVE AND STUPID! OH HUMANITY! I mean, Albert Einstein was one of the brains behind the whole damn thing, but he only did it because he was deathly afraid of Adolf Hitler getting his hands on one of those puppies first, so he urged FDR to act urgently to beat the Nazis, before they dropped one of those things on us.

Alas, the United States did become the first ever country to have the bomb and the Japanese got to suffer the two only known uses of the bomb on civilian populations in recorded history. If ya think the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bad, imagine one of today's even more powerful nukes on a city like New York! EEK! That would be pretty nightmarish; instant vaporization, hanging skin, and severe burns galore! Ya ever seen that movie Trinity and Beyond? You have to get your hands on that DVD, which curiously enough, is narrated by oddball William Shatner. It shows you some
amazing footage of all sorts of nuclear tests. Dem blasts are huge! HUGE! So gorgeous, and yet oh so unnerving!

And now, sixty-two years later after the development and use of nuclear weapons, more countries possess this awesome power than ever before. It used to be only the USA and the Soviets had it, which had everyone freaking out during the Cold War, but now even potential conflicting weirdos like India and Pakistan are known nuclear powers. That is not very comforting, nor is the sad terrible more-than-likely eventuality that terrorists are gonna get a hold of one of those suitcase-sized ones the Russians have carelessly let go, and use it to blow up American/Western interests. I pray and hope that in our lifetimes we do not witness such a catastrophe. The loss of human life and structural damage from one of those things would make 9/11 look like a walk in the park.

Oh, but it is such a beautiful mushroom cloud
!

I'm obsessed with that film and the others that came out of Peter Kuran. So obsessed that I requested to work on his next project.
I have them all if you want to borrow them. Atomic Journeys is the best. You get to see where major atomic tests have taken place in the US and what they look like today. Some areas you'd never guess were atomic bomb sites.

Much as we can get in a stew thinking about bigger, higher tech bombs and doomsday devices, it's easy to forget the role box cutters played in 9/11.

Ultimately it's little, unexpected things like that which can make us freak out.

I saw Karen Black at the Castro Theater a few years ago, and she said that her "Trilogy of Terror" spooked people because it was something little, a doll, that drove her nuts.

Then again, seeing Karen Black in close up these days is about as spooky as any device of mass destruction. If she ever joins forces with Oprah, humanity is doomed.

I'm less worried about Pakistan and India than I am about France bombing us for improper pronunciation.

This topic isn't a happy one, I must admit. I hate thinking about it, it's one of the worst things that could happen.

well, well, well. You're awfully chipper today!
I grew up a hop-skip-and-a-jump from Los Alamos, and I can hardly believe that such destructive bombs exist. Shudder. Not a big fan. But yes, mushroom cloud pretty!

ah, wmds. such a convenient excuse, aren't they? i mean really, if you want to start a war with another country over terror...or oil...all you have to do is cry atomic bomb and poof, pointless war.
or at least, i believe that's the agenda our dubya was following, was it not?
god, i can't even think about atomic bombs, but in a way it's calming. i know that sounds weird, but think about it. one of the things that scares me about terrorism, death etc. is having my loved ones die or dying and leaving my loved ones behind. obviously i am horrified by nuclear war but i don't think it would be the worst way to go, just in my opinion.
yet another insightful and awesome post...geez, what are we going to do with you?

Dude, you been watching 24 on FOX? Soviets gave terrorist suitcase bombs and they detonated one in LA. Hollywood is so predictable! LOL

Either way, yeah it is some scary shit, but watching footage of this stuff gets me HARD!

the mushroom cloud is such a striking image. i remember watching a series about the fallout from a nuclear bomb in britain when i was but a tiny pod, and in the opening credits milk bottles melted on a doorstep. it terrified me, as did the series about rabies. i have taken some photos of mushroom clouds (from the tv of course). will post one day....

Isn't it typically "American" to spend a fortune developing a lethal weapon, then use it to destroy generations of innocent civilians, and then spend another fortune trying to prevent other Nations from developing their own devices because we have proven we are not afraid to strike without provocation.

All of the great Empires eventually fell, and this "great empire" will too fall. It's time for American's to work on H U M I L I T Y.

What a complete and utter waste of knowledge and genius. Imagine what could've been harnessed with that incredible energy and manipulation of tiny, beyond-microscopic particles??

Lurved that pic... it jumped out right at me. I swear I felt my skin scorch for a hot sec.

I still can believe the Americans actually dropped the bomb. Sounds crazy to want to exterminate people like that. Oh well, they were the first ones but not the last ones I guess...

France used to test bombs in the Pacific, looked beautiful, Now South pacific countries hate us, but damn, we got some good pictures of mushrooms ! :D

(Just kidding of course, I'm a peaceful hippie...)
